Hydrogen Gas in Water

Have you been thinking of trying the new hydrogen gas water trend? Several studies have found that there are anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in hydrogen water, which makes it a healthy beverage for health-conscious adults.

However, hydrogen gas in water doesn’t always mean that you’ll get the same results and benefits. A number of companies are pushing hydrogen gas tablets to drop in your water, but it’s not as effective as using a hydrogen water ionizer. We’ll go over how hydrogen gas is added to water and what drinking this water could mean for your health.

Hydrogen Gas in Water: Does It Work?

Hydrogen water is when additional hydrogen gas molecules are added to regular water.

As an element, hydrogen is colorless, non-toxic, and odorless. It can bind to other elements like carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen, and that creates other compounds including sugar or water.

Water already consists of two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom, but many studies have found that when additional hydrogen gas is added to water, it produces healing and medicinal benefits not available in your typical glass of water.

In short, hydrogen water works for certain health issues and also helps athletes with muscle recovery. Many studies support these results, including a study that looked at free radicals and oxidative stress. It’s thought that this is the main reason that hydrogen gas in water can be so beneficial to your body.

How Hydrogen Gas is Added to Water

When you get a glass of water from the tap, it already contains hydrogen. However, research has shown that hydrogen in plain water isn’t as effective as hydrogenated water. That’s because hydrogen gas is infused into regular water, adding more molecules of hydrogen. However, it doesn’t change the structure or pH of the water on its own.

One of the simplest ways to get hydrogen water is to bubble pure hydrogen gas into water, but if you’re health-conscious and want to drink hydrogen water at home, there are also hydrogen water ionizers that use electrolysis to create hydrogen water.

For example, the Tyent Alkaline H2 hybrid hydrogen water ionizer is a combination water filter, alkalizer, and hydrogen generator. However, there are many hydrogen water generators on the market that can’t provide hydrogen water like the Tyent H2.

That’s because you also want your water to have a more negative oxidation reduction potential (ORP). Plain water typically doesn’t have very negative ORP. Ideally, your water ionizer generates a -850 or lower negative ORP of -1050.

With a more negative ORP, your water is guaranteed to have antioxidants, which is the whole goal of drinking hydrogen water. With more antioxidants, your body is able to reduce oxidative stress at a higher rate. The research shows that this is the root of hydrogen water’s medicinal properties.

Can Hydrogen Water Heal You?

Some companies play up the medicinal properties of hydrogen gas in water, but the truth is that multiple studies have shown the benefits of drinking hydrogenated water.

For example, one study involved 49 patients suffering from liver cancer who were undergoing radiation therapy. One group of participants drank hydrogen water throughout their cancer treatment, and ultimately, this group reported a higher quality of life with a reduction in their symptoms from radiation therapy. However, the placebo group did not report any changes from before drinking plain water.

Athletes have also used hydrogen water for many years because of its ability to lessen muscle fatigue and aid in faster muscle recovery. A study found that hydrogen water was able to reduce inflammation and lactate in blood after muscle fatigue from working out.

While more testing is still in the works, it looks like hydrogen water does have some of the healing properties due to providing anti-inflammatory properties and antioxidants to those who drink it.

Does Hydrogen Water Have a Shelf Life?

Hydrogen gas in water isn’t active for very long. In fact, that’s why bottled or canned hydrogen water may not provide the same results as a hydrogen water ionizer that you have at home. One of the reasons is because hydrogen water doesn’t hold its charge for longer than an hour in most cases.

If you want to get the benefits of hydrogen water, it’s suggested that you drink hydrogen water right after the gas has been bubbled into the water or right after creating with an electrolyzer, such as with a hydrogen water machine like the Tyent H2 Hybrid.

Should You Drink Hydrogen Gas in Water?

There aren’t any negative side effects of drinking hydrogen water. It’s odorless and tasteless just like plain water. In addition, it’s been marked GRAS or generally recognized as safe by the FDA. This means that it’s been approved for human consumption, and it’s generally not known to have any hazards.

However, you should be aware that there isn’t an industry-wide standard as to what constitutes true “hydrogen water.” If you look at some of the products being offered on Amazon, you’ll notice that they don’t say anything about antioxidants, reducing oxidative stress, or negative ORP levels. Without these three specifications, you won’t really know if the hydrogen water bottle or tablet works like it’s supposed to. If you do happen to test a hydrogen water maker, you’ll notice that these machines allow you to customize the pH and negative ORP of your water, creating a glass of purified hydrogen water that’s packed with antioxidants.
